President’s Message: What’s Love Got To Do With It?

In Alzheimer's Care, Alzheimer's Research, General, KK Meditation, Meditation, Newsletter, Stress Management, Yoga for Alzheimer's

To really take care of your brain so you can stay sharp all through your life, and do everything possible to prevent the dreaded Alzheimer’s disease requires a unique state of mind.

I’m going to call this state of mind “brain love.”

You really need to love your brain enough to live a full-on brain longevity lifestyle.

I kid you not.

This is serious business, friends.

We saw this in my original research in 1995, when I discovered that what works for the heart, works for the head. That means to live a brain-healthy lifestyle means that you’re helping your heart too, and beyond that, your immune system and every other system in your body.

After all, it’s all connected.

This has been revealed again by ARPF’s great research partner and Scientific Advisory Council member, Miia Kivipelto, MD, PhD, who recently published another important scientific article: Trials and Treatments for Vascular Brain Health: Risk Factor Modification and Cognitive Outcomes.

She and a team of researchers summarized findings from several trials. Their conclusion?

The same as ours all those years age: What works for the heart, works for the head

We are seeing continued robust evidence linking vascular health to brain health, cognition, and dementia prevention.

Given that Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology usually co-exists with vascular pathology, and that many vascular risk factors are linked to AD risk itself, vascular risk factors are one of the major preventable and treatable components of dementia.

Beyond that, the stress of today, inflammation, and your cognitive reserve also play a strong role in cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.

That’s why our 4 Pillars of Alzheimer’s Prevention are so crucial.

The Pillars cover it all:

  1. Nutritional Fitness: A good healthy Mediterranean type diet
  2. Stress Fitness: This includes yoga and our Kirtan Kriya meditation
  3. Physical Fitness: Exercise is a must; both cardio and strength training
  4. Spiritual Fitness: Those who develop and maintain a strong connection to their spirit by whatever means that works for them, enjoy a higher level of brain health throughout their entire life.

Alzheimer’s prevention is possible.

Love your brain and make it a reality.

Yours in Brain Health,
Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D.
