President’s Message
Report from the International Alzheimer’s Conference
Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., Founding President/Medical Director
Dear friend,
We’re back in Tucson after attending the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark in mid-July. This event is a hub of scientists and healthcare practitioners who share their knowledge, experience, and research results. Attendees come from all over the world – including the UK, France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Japan, China, Turkmenistan, Poland, Canada, and of course the USA; in total, 4,500 attendees.
This tells us Alzheimer’s knows no boundaries.
The conference is divided into two main parts: oral presentations and poster presentations. Many significant updates are presented at the oral sessions. However, I find the poster presentations absolutely enlightening. There are many hundreds of poster presenters, and it’s fascinating to meet with the many researchers who are working at finding a breakthrough for this terrible disease. If you follow us on Facebook and Twitter, you see the pictures of some of them and their current work.
As you can imagine, most of the current research focuses on the development of drugs. For example, the most important research being done at the moment is on what’s called amyloid, a sticky substance found in brains of people with Alzheimer’s and Mild Cognitive Impairment. Intriguingly, amyloid is also found in many brains of people without any memory issues, so it is a bit of a controversial topic, with many scientists unclear of its exact relevance. Nevertheless, research is under way to study the use of amyloid-removal drugs on the prevention, progression, and reversal of memory loss.
Dr. Khalsa explaining ARPF research achievements at the International Alzheimer's Association Conference
Beyond that, I was pleased to see additional research being presented on various lifestyle approaches to memory loss and Alzheimer’s, including balance and cognitive function, nutrition, sleep, and other holistic or integrative medical approaches. Please read page 5 for an important update on significant research funded by your ARPF. This year there were quite a few studies being presented about physical exercise: two in conjunction with the Mayo Clinic, and the FIT-AD study, a five-year project just starting at the University of Minnesota, fully funded by the National Institute of Health. I am confident that we will learn much useful information from this research.
But in the meantime, my advice is, don’t wait for the research to be completed; get out your sneakers and exercise. Utilizing a combination of cardio and strength training is good for your brain.
As I’m sure you know, we at ARPF have been studying Kirtan Kriya, a simple 12-minute singing exercise, for many years. This year, thanks to your support, I presented a poster called “Yoga Medical Meditation May Modulate MCI Progression.” Discover more about our research, and download your own personal copy of Kirtan Kriya, at our website www.alzheimersprevention.org.
Along with the ARPF 4 Pillars of Prevention (listed on page 5), practice Kirtan Kriya every day, and you’ll definitely enjoy a lifetime of peak mental performance.
May all your memories be great,
Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D.

ARPF Outreach Update
by Conni Ingallina, ARPF Communications Director
Conni Ingallina, ARPF Communications Director
Each newsletter I get the privilege to talk with you about ARPF’s outreach activities. What does that word “outreach” mean? To us, it means reaching out to spread the word about Alzheimer’s prevention, the work of the ARPF, and its benefits for those who are prevention-minded. We hear stories every day about how you are impacted by Alzheimer’s, and how our programs are benefitting you. Last year alone, we were able to impact 40,000 people just through our online and in-person activities!
Here are some ways we’ve provided resources and information in the past quarter:
May Teleseminar with Dr. David Perlmutter, a renowned neurologist who is best known for his best-selling book called Grain Brain. He spoke on “Nutrition and Your Brain: The Latest Discoveries.” There were a record number of attendees, and we heard from many of you about how helpful it was to hear his advice and learn from his vast knowledge. George said, “Dr. Perlmutter was very enlightening…Certainly it offers hope to all wishing to prevent Alzheimer’s.”
And the winner is... Laney Townsend, ARPF Outreach Assistant, awards Jan M. Whalen from Sun City, AZ, 'Brain Longevity.'
Born to Thrive Conference – Two of our representatives hosted a booth at this event on May 5th at the Desert Botanical Gardens. Our 20th Anniversary elephant charm, designed by co-founder Kay McDonald, was given to each guest, and we awarded Dr. Dharma’s book, “Brain Longevity” to a lucky winner.
Contests – See below for a touching story about Mother’s Day.
July Teleseminar with Del Jones, Co-Founder of Elder Circles, and Executive Director Emeritus of the Wellness Council of Tucson. In this conversation, “The Wisdom Journey: Discover the New Power of Elder Circles,” she discussed the importance of looking at our life journey, leaving a legacy, becoming a wise elder that mentors others, and how to find joy in your life, no matter what your circumstances.
Sun City Oro Valley Library Exhibit
Library Display – Some of ARPF’s resources were displayed beautifully at the Sun City Oro Valley Library. They created a three-week long Alzheimer’s exhibit on their new end-display shelves. It’s exciting to see how organizations such as this are highlighting our materials.
Offering hope and providing resources is exactly what the ARPF is all about. We are continually providing opportunities for you to be involved. You can find them on our Events page, or check out our Facebook page, where you can stay connected and be a part of the ongoing conversation about Alzheimer’s prevention.
Blessings,

What Others are Saying About ARPF

“When it comes to brain health and being sure you are not one of the almost 50% of us who may develop dementia, the name of the game is prevention. There is no pill, no magic bullet that will keep your brain functioning optimally. For that, lifestyle strategies like diet and exercise have been shown to be of enormous benefit. But there is also the practice of meditation, and specifically Kirtan Kriya, that is emerging as an important tool for optimizing brain capacity and improving mood. The Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation is the only organization undertaking a serious scientific evaluation of this noninvasive technique for the betterment of our brains.”
Karen Koffler, M.D., Medical Director, Canyon Ranch
Miami Beach, FL
From our Mother’s Day Contest
“Thank you for allowing us to take part in the Alzheimer Prevention & Research Foundation’s acknowledgement of mothers. My mother had Alzheimer’s Disease. She recently passed away, and this is our first Mother’s Day without her. When I saw this contest, I invited my siblings to write their thoughts about Mom as a tribute to her for Mother’s Day. It was a very moving experience and brought us much joy in remembrance. Thank you for inspiring us. Please continue your excellent work to eradicate this tragic disease.”

ARPF Research Update
Report from the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER study), ARPF-funded.

We are delighted to report the preliminary, positive results of this important study, which was presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Denmark in July. Your ARPF provided financial support for this far-reaching research project, because we believe that it fits perfectly with ARPF’s 4 Pillars of Prevention Program.
This research has shown some of the best evidence yet that healthy living helps fight mental decline. The team was led by Miia Kivipelto, MD, PhD from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, and the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Helsinki, Finland. The study has revealed that exercise and diet have a major impact in decreasing the risk of an individual developing Alzheimer’s disease.
The trial followed 1,260 adults for two years. Those recruited for the study were between the ages of 60 and 77, and at risk for Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The study subjects were randomly divided into two groups. One group was offered standard care, while the other group was asked to undergo lifestyle and diet changes. Because of the high risk for developing cognitive problems, these participants were very motivated to improve their lifestyle.
Although the complete research data is still being analyzed, preliminary results reveal that the group which underwent lifestyle changes showed improvement in cognitive function, and performed better in memory tests. These are the lifestyle interventions:
• Healthy eating
• Exercising
• Cognitive training
• Management of heart-health risk factors
This study is the first to examine the impact of all four factors together; other studies have looked at single pieces of healthy lifestyles, but not the combination.
As you can see, these align with the ARPF’s 4 Pillars of Prevention: Diet and Supplements, Physical and Mental Exercise, Stress Management, and Prescription Medications, which we have been advocating since 1993. Thanks to the support of so many people like you, we were able to help fund this outstanding study.
The FINGER researchers are planning a seven-year followup study, and we believe it’s very important to continue this research. We need your financial help to further this work on the prevention of Alzheimer’s. This is how you can continue to make a difference. Please consider donating today.

For the latest, up-to-the-minute news on appearances, activities, announcements, what’s going on in the Alzheimer’s world, and pictures of ARPF at work, make sure you ‘Like’ us on Facebook. That’s where all the latest information is posted on a daily basis.
Just like all information you give to ARPF, your e-mail address will remain private and will never be given or sold to an outside organization.
