About the Presenters: 

Jeanine Launay, Esq.

Jeanine Launay is Chief of the Elder Abuse Unit for the New York County District Attorney’s Office. Ms. Launay joined the District Attorney’s Office in 1989 and has worked in the Domestic Violence Unit, the Special Narcotics Bureau, the Child Abuse Unit and in Trial Bureaus handling a wide range of criminal offenses. She has investigated and prosecuted cases from intake through Grand Jury presentations and trial. From 2010 to 2022, she was Deputy Chief of the Domestic Violence Unit where she supervised the investigation and prosecution of domestic violence and stalking cases. In 2022, she was appointed Chief of the Eder Abuse Unit, in the Special Victims Division, where she supervises criminal cases committed against adults over the age of 60 including offenses resulting from domestic violence. She participates in outreach and training both inside and outside the Office. Ms. Launay has presented nationally and abroad. She has spoken to students, health care providers, community groups and at consulates about the work that the Office undertakes on behalf of victims of domestic violence and elder abuse.

Vimi Bhatia, Esq.

Vimi Bhatia joined the New York County District Attorney’s Office in 2000 and was assigned to the Trial Division. Vimi was a member of the Identity Theft Unit, and she prosecuted a wide variety of cases, including attempted murders, robberies, burglaries, weapons possessions, check frauds, identity thefts, and drug cases. In 2007, Vimi joined the Investigation Division and was assigned to the former Frauds Bureau, and then became a member of the Major Economic Crimes Bureau upon its creation in 2010. In the Investigation Division, Vimi investigated and prosecuted a wide variety of cases, including embezzlements, money laundering, tax crimes, Ponzi and advance fee schemes, and frauds involving bank notes, investments, securities, mortgages, insurance, and affinity.  In 2013, Vimi was appointed to be the Deputy Chief of the Asset Forfeiture Unit and she recouped $22 million dollars for the Social Security Administration after working on a social security disability fraud investigation. Vimi was also a member of the Permanent Legal Hiring Board and the Diversity Committee. In 2018, Vimi was named the Coordinator of the Manhattan Child Advocacy Center where she investigated and assisted in the prosecution of child abuse cases. In 2024, Vimi was appointed to be the Deputy Chief of the Elder Abuse Unit and she is responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes in New York County in which victims are age 60 and over.

Vimi is a recipient of the 2024 Sloan Public Service Award. She graduated from The George Washington University and earned her law degree from Hofstra Law School where she served as an editor for the Hofstra Law Review.
